flourished 3rd century AD Greek author of a treatise on music (Per musiks), one of the principal sources of modern knowledge of ancient Greek music. The work deals with scales, metres, and the composition of melodies, as well as with the educational value of music and the relation of music, through mathematics, to phenomena in nature. It was regarded by Byzantine and Arab scholars as a basic work, and its importance is generally accepted by modern scholars. It was published in 1652, edited by Marcus Meibom; in 1882 in a critical edition by Albert Jahn; and in 1937, in German translation with commentary, by Rudolf Schfke.
