Founded in 1924, Artyom became a city in 1938 and is a centre of lignite (brown coal) production. Factories produce building materials, porcelain, and pianos. The city was named in memory of the Soviet statesman and revolutionary F.A. Sergeyev (alias Artyom). Pop. (1991 est.) 70,100.
