town, Sane-et-Loire dpartement, Bourgogne region, central France, on the Arroux River, southwest of Dijon. Augustodunum (Autun) succeeded Bibracte as the Gallic oppidum, and was an important Roman city renowned for its schools of rhetoric. Autun is a market for the livestock of the Morvan highlands and is a centre for leather, furniture, and metal industries. Shale oil is extracted on a small scale from the pinac coalfield. Pop.
