AVENS

Meaning of AVENS in English

any of various perennial, flowering plants of the genus Geum, within the rose family (Rosaceae). Most of the approximately 50 species occur in the northern or southern temperate zones or in the Arctic. Several species are cultivated for their white, red, orange, or yellow flowers. As a rule the plants grow no more than 60 centimetres (2 feet) tall. The leaves are chiefly basal (i.e., arise from the base of the stem) and are compound or deeply lobed or cut. The flowers, commonly 23 cm (about an inch) in diameter, are solitary or in small clusters.
