avant-garde Polish literary movement that was launched in 1922 at Krakw; the movement led to a regeneration of poetic technique and a renewed interest in Polish folklore and pre-17th-century Polish literature. Influenced by revolutionary trends in poetry, particularly Futurism, in France, Italy, and Spain, the Awangarda movement opposed the emphasis on lyricism and anti-intellectualism of the contemporary Skamander group. Associated with the Awangarda were Julian Przybos, one of the outstanding poets of the post-World War II period; Adam Wazyk, poet, essayist, prose writer, and brilliant translator; and Jzef Czechowicz, who assimilated traditional and regional elements to the new style.
