resort town, Veszprm megye (county), central Hungary, on the north shore of Lake Balaton. The town has been known for at least 250 years as a health spa and resort. In the town centre is Gygy Tr (Healing Square), where the waters of volcanic springs rise up under a pavilion. There are 11 medicinal springs in the area that are said to have a stimulating effect on the heart and nerves. The foothills of the Bakony Mountains to the north protect the town from cold winds and help make the district one of the most celebrated wine-growing regions of Hungary. Pop. (1989 est.) 15,678.
