Meaning of BANYUWANGI in English

also spelled Banjuwangi, or Banjoewangi, city and kabupaten (regency), Jawa Timur propinsi (East Java province), Java, Indonesia. A major port on the Selat (strait) Bali, opposite Bali just to the east, it is located 120 mi (193 km) southeast of Surabaya, the capital of Jawa Timur. It is linked by railway and road with Jember to the west and by road with Situbondo to the northwest. Exports are copra, lumber, and rubber from the inland area. Industries include sawmilling, wood carving, paper making, leather tanning, and printing. The population is predominantly Javanese, and Islam, influenced by Hindu and Buddhist customs, is the dominant religion. About 50 mi south of Banyuwangi is the Sukameda beach; a wildlife preserve containing the Java tiger, and the Bawean Bird Park are located nearby. Banyuwangi is the terminus of cables from Australia and Singapore. Pop. (1980) city, 90,359; regency, 1,420,837.
