BARUTA

city, northwestern Miranda estado (state), northern Venezuela, in the central highlands. Formerly a commercial centre in a fertile agricultural area producing coffee, cacao, and sugarcane, the city has become a residential suburb in the Caracas metropolitan area. An expressway links Baruta to Caracas (north-northeast). Pop. (1990 est.) 279,614.
