formerly Bassari, town, north-central Togo. The town lies in a major cotton growing area about 30 miles (50 km) northwest of Sokod, Togo's second largest town. Bassar serves as an important centre for commercial trade. It has road links with Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta) to the north and the national capital of Lom to the south. The Bassar people inhabit the town and surrounding area. Pop. (1981) 17,764.
