It is a commercial and manufacturing centre for the surrounding agricultural lands, known primarily for their tobacco and sugarcane, although pineapples and various other fruits and vegetables also are grown. The city contains cigar factories and a cotton mill. Goods are shipped via the central highway to the urban markets in Havana, 15 miles (24 km) northeast. Pop. (1989 est.) 32,209.
