Any small, fleshy fruit is popularly called a berry, especially if it is edible. Raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries are not true berries but aggregate fruitsfruits that consist of a number of smaller fruits. The date is a one-seeded berry whose stone is hard nutritive tissue. The leathery-rinded berry of citrus fruits is called a hesperidium, and the elongated, tough-skinned berrylike fruits of the watermelon, cucumber, and gourds are referred to as pepos.
