BITTERROOT

Meaning of BITTERROOT in English

(Lewisia rediviva), ornamental succulent plant of the purslane family (Portulacaceae), native to western North America and cultivated in rock gardens. The main stem and root merge into a tuberous structure. The leaves are barely 2.5 centimetres (1 inch) long, and the flowering stalk with pink or white flowers is also very short. The starchy root, resembling a forked radish, is edible in spring but acquires a bitter taste by summer. Other species of the genus also are cultivated as rock-garden plants for their attractive flowers.
