formerly Berhampur, town, southeastern Orissa state, eastern India, 9 miles (14 km) from the Bay of Bengal. It lies on the Calcutta-Madras national highway and the South-Eastern Railway line; it is a trade centre for rice, sugarcane, and other agricultural products of the region. Industries include rice milling, distilling, and silk weaving. Khallikote College (established 1878), the University of Berhampur (established 1967), a law school, a medical college, a teachers' training school, and a women's college are located there. Pop. (1981) 162,550.
