married name Mrs. Arthur Bell Nicholls, pseudonym Currer Bell born April 21, 1816, Thornton, Yorkshire, Eng. died March 31, 1855, Haworth, Yorkshire Charlotte Bront, detail of chalk drawing by George Richmond, 1850; in the National Portrait English novelist, noted for Jane Eyre (1847), a strong narrative of a woman in conflict with her natural desires and social condition. The novel gave new truthfulness to Victorian fiction. She later wrote Shirley (1849) and Villette (1853).
