mental disorder characterized by periods of binging (extreme overindulgence in food) followed by purging, including induced vomiting. Repetition of the cycle can lead to serious medical complications, such as dental decay, stomach rupture, or dehydration, and can be fatal. Bulimia generally begins during adolescence or early adult life and is more prevalent in females. Individuals who suffer from this disorder show great concern for their weight and body shape; the majority, however, are close to their proper weight. Depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem are associated features. Treatment may include psychotherapy. The disorder is distinct from anorexia nervosa, which involves an emotional or psychological aversion to food and results in extreme emaciation.
