French nobleman in Shakespeare's Henry V and Henry VI, Part 1. At the very end of Henry V, Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy, arranges the Treaty of Troyes and the marital alliance of Henry and Katharine. He first appears in Henry VI, Part 1 as a military ally of the English, but he is persuaded to return to the French cause by Joan la Pucelle (Joan of Arc), who appeals to his patriotism. Burgundy thus represents the shifting loyalties of those caught up in the war between England and France.
