BUSUM

town, Schleswig-Holstein Land (state), northern Germany, on the North Sea, southwest of Heide. The principal fishing harbour of the Dithmarschen (marshland protected by dikes), specializing in crabs, it has become a popular seaside resort and spa. There are boat connections to the island of Helgoland, and horses are raced on the sand flats. Bsum has a fish- and crab-canning industry and a station for deep-sea zoological research. Pop. (1993 est.) 4,764.
