It was given city status in 1889. Cachoeiro de Itapemirim is a manufacturing centre and serves a livestock-raising region. It lies on the main highway and railroad linking Vitria, the state capital (70 miles northeast), with Campos, in Rio de Janeiro state. Pop. (1991 prelim.) mun., 143,763.
