CALAISIAN SUBSTAGE

Meaning of CALAISIAN SUBSTAGE in English

division of Holocene deposits and time in northern Europe (the Holocene Epoch began about 10,000 years ago and continues to the present). The Calaisian was named for a sequence of deposits in France and represents a period of rising sea levels; it is correlated with the Middle Flandrian Stage. In The Netherlands, the Calais deposits overlie the Lower Peat and underlie the Velsen Layer and appear to have formed between 8,000 and 6,000 years ago. The Calais deposits are the products of a series of marine invasions of coastal areas.
