city, south-central Alberta, Canada, on Camrose Creek near Bittern Lake, 58 miles (93 km) southeast of Edmonton. Founded in 1905 as the village of Sparling, after the Methodist clergyman Joseph W. Sparling (18431912), it was incorporated (1907) as a town and renamed for Camrose, Wales. An agricultural, dairying, and railroad centre, it is surrounded by hundreds of oil wells. The city produces steel and processes grain, flour, and meat products. Camrose is the site of Augustana University College (1910). Inc. city, 1955. Pop. (1991) 13,420.
