also called Cangas De Tineo, city, Asturias provincia and Asturias comunidad autnoma (autonomous community), northwestern Spain. It lies southwest of Oviedo city at the confluence of the Narcea and Luia rivers. The name combines cangas (meaning town) with the Narcea, which is spanned by a Roman bridge. Notable buildings in the city include the monastery of San Juan de Corias, called the Escorial of the Asturias (dating from the 13th century and rebuilt in the 18th), and the Collegiate Church of Santa Mara Magdalena (1639), containing the tomb of its founder, Archbishop Valds Llano. Mining of coal and lead, which are trucked to the port of San Esteban and the rail station of Pravia, are the dominant economic activities, but meatpacking and tourism are also significant. Pop.
