CARROLL, EARL

born Sept. 16, 1893, Pittsburgh, Pa., U.S. died June 17, 1948, near Mount Carmel, Pa. American showman, theatrical producer, and director, best known for his Earl Carroll's Vanities (192248), which were popular revues of songs, dances, and flamboyantly costumed ladies. Over the doors of his Earl Carroll Theatre in New York City and his Earl Carroll Restaurant in Hollywood he emblazoned his slogan, Through These Portals Pass the Most Beautiful Girls in the World. Carroll quit school at age 10, worked at odd jobs in Pittsburgh theatres from 1903 to 1910, and at age 16 worked his way around the world. In New York City he became successful as a songwriter (191217) and then as a producer and opened his first Earl Carroll Theatre in 1922; there and at a second Earl Carroll Theatre built in 1931 he produced 15 Vanities and two Sketch Book Reviews in the coming years. In 1938 he built his restaurant (including a theatre) in Hollywood and put on 12 more Vanities. Over the years he also produced or directed more than 60 Broadway and other plays and a few motion pictures. He died in the crash of a commercial airliner.
