town and port, southwestern Guatemala, on the Pacific Ocean. Linked by paved highway with Retalhuleu, Champerico is the nation's third most important port and its best on the Pacific, even though it is open and unprotected and ships have to anchor about 1 mile (1.6 km) offshore. It handles chiefly coffee, timber, and sugar. Pop. (1981) 6,891.
