a minor tranquilizing drug used orally or by injection for treatment of anxiety and tension states. It has a molecular formula of C16H14ClN3O and forms yellow crystals that have a melting point of about 236 C (457 F). The drug was introduced in the 1960s under several proprietary names, including Libritabs (the original base) and Librium (the hydrochloride salt). Chlordiazepoxide belongs to a group of chemically related compounds called benzodiazepines. It can be used as a sedative to relieve stress either before or after surgery, to control anxiety symptoms associated with acute alcohol withdrawal, and as a treatment for panic disorders. Among the most common side effects of usage are drowsiness, confusion, and an inability to control voluntary muscular movements. Prolonged use may lead to physical dependence.
