also called trichloronitromethane organic compound that has been used as a chemical-warfare agent, notably as tear gas; it also is used as a chemical intermediate and an ingredient of fumigants, insecticides, fungicides, and rodenticides. This toxic, colourless liquid is usually prepared by treating picric acid with an aqueous suspension of bleaching powder.
