Primary chondrosarcoma arises and grows rapidly without a preexisting cartilaginous focus; the secondary type develops slowly from a previously benign tumour of cartilage. Pain is the major symptom. Surgical removal may afford cure although the tumour shows a tendency to recur in the area of surgery. Five years after diagnosis, some 35 percent of patients remain alive.
