the young lord of Florence and beloved of Hero in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. Claudio is the placid, romantic hero whose gullibility makes him a perfect mark for Don John's diabolical contrivances and ignites the near-tragedy of the plot. Although he unjustly rejects Hero, Claudio is treated sympathetically Shakespeare, for even the older and supposedly wiser Don Pedro has been similarly misled.
