city, on the MadisonSt. Clair county line, southwestern Illinois, U.S. Laid out in 1837 and named for an early pioneer family, it has evolved as part of the St. Louis, Mo., urban industrial complex. Once a bituminous coal-mining centre (the first of a score of mines was sunk in 1859), it now depends on food processing and clothing manufacturing. Fairmont Race Track and the Cahokia Mounds State Historic and World Heritage Site (Indian prehistoric burial grounds) are a few miles west. Inc. village, 1856; city, 1872. Pop. (1990) 22,446.
