born 15th century, , Genoa died 1514/15, Santo Domingo, Hispaniola [now Dominican Republic] Italian Bartolomeo Colombo, Spanish Bartolom Coln Italian explorer, brother of Christopher Columbus, accomplished cartographer and cosmographer, and probably collaborator on his brother's project to sail around the world. In 1484 he visited Henry VII of England and gave him a map of the world, showing the lands he and his brother wanted to explore. He founded the city of Santo Domingo in 1496 and was its first governor and captain-general. In 1503 Christopher left him in Panama to establish a colony, but Indian attacks forced the evacuation of the expedition.
