former taxonomic order that included the water birds known as loons and grebes. Later scholarship determined that these two groups were not related, and ornithologists devised new and separate classifications for them: Gaviiformes (loons) and Podicipediformes (sometimes spelled Podicipitiformes; grebes). The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature suppressed the order name Colymbiformes and that of the genus Colymbus, both of which have been variously applied to grebes in the New World and loons in the Old. The similarities in the two groups are a result of convergent adaptation rather than common evolutionary background. See also grebe; loon.
