tidal waterway across the Isthmus of Corinth in Greece, joining the Gulf of Corinth in the northwest with the Saronic Gulf in the southeast. Opened in 1893, the canal is 3.9 miles (6.3 km) long and has a water depth of 26 feet (8 m); its width varies from a minimum of 69 feet (21 m) at the bottom to 82 feet (25 m) maximum at the water's surface. The canal has brought great economic benefits to the ports of Posithona at its northwest end and Isthma at its southeast end.
