(Karwinskia humboldtiana), woody shrub of the buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae) that is native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It grows about 17 m (323 feet) tall and has opposite, oval leaves 2.57.5 cm (13 inches) long. The small, greenish flowers, which grow in clusters, are followed by brownish black oval berries about 1 cm in diameter. The fruit is poisonous to humans and to livestock.
