city, seat (1877) of Cullman county, on Brindley Mountain, northern Alabama, U.S. It was founded in 1873 by a German refugee group led by Johann Gottfried Cullman. Agriculture, poultry, and manufacturing (chiefly electrical appliances and metal products) are the city's economic mainstays. Clarkson covered bridge (1904), the largest covered bridge in Alabama, is 9 miles (14 km) west of Cullman. Inc. 1878. Pop. (1993 est.) 14,815.
