Meaning of DALKEITH in English

burgh (town), Midlothian council area and historic county, southeastern Scotland. It is near the capital, Edinburgh, and has an increasing population of workers who commute to that city. Dalkeith is an agricultural, educational, and electronic-engineering centre, with some of the latter activity housed in the former corn exchange (1854). Other industries include carpet making, brewing, and printing. Located 1 mile (1.6 km) south is Newbattle Abbey, former seat of the marquesses of Lothian and now a residential college for adult education. Dalkeith Palace (rebuilt c. 1700) houses the Scottish study centre of the University of Wisconsin. Dalkeith is also the site of Jewel and Esk Valley College. Pop. (1991) 11,567.
