An agricultural trade centre, it has industries that include oilseed milling, handloom weaving and dyeing, and the manufacture of bell-metal vessels and pottery. The town has a weekly cattle market. Damoh rose to importance in the 14th century when occupied by the Muslims and was the seat of Maratha governors. It was constituted a municipality in 1867 and has a hospital and three colleges affiliated with the University of Saugar. Pop. (1981) town, 75,573; metropolitan area, 76,758.
