DANSEREAU, PIERRE

born Oct. 5, 1911, Montreal, Que., Can. in full Pierre Mackay Dansereau French-Canadian plant ecologist who was a pioneer in the study of the dynamics of forests and who attempted to extend ecological concepts to the modern human environment. Dansereau attended the University of Montreal (B.A., 1932; B.S., 1936) and the University of Geneva (D.Sc., 1939). He spent most of his teaching career at the University of Montreal (194050, 195561, and 196872), with periods at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (195055); the New York Botanical Garden, New York City (196168); and the University of Quebec, Montreal (196876), becoming emeritus professor there in 1976. He wrote papers on the taxonomy, cytology, and evolution of rock roses (Cistus), cinquefoils (Potentilla), violets (Viola), and maples (Acer). He received many awards and citations and in 1969 was named Companion of the Order of Canada. His books include Biogeography, an Ecological Perspective (1957); Contradictions & Biculture (1964); Challenge for Survival: Land, Air, and Water for Man in Megalopolis (as editor; 1970); and Harmony and Disorder in the Canadian Environment (1975).
