wife of the Moor Othello in Shakespeare's Othello. Greatly loved by Othello, Desdemona is also abused and murdered by him. Before she is dispatched by her jealous husband, she protests her innocence and unwavering love of Othello, ironically, to Iago, the very man who has engineered her fate: Unkindness may do much, And his unkindness may defeat my life, But never taint my love.
