DOBSON, FRANK

Meaning of DOBSON, FRANK in English

born Nov. 18, 1888, London, Eng. died July 22, 1963, London English sculptor influential in the promotion and development of modern art in England. Dobson studied at the City and Guilds of London Art School and worked with the Cornish granite cutters. Influenced by Cubism, his early work was geometric and abstract, but he eventually turned to figurative sculpture inspired by the classically ideal style of Aristide Maillol. His subject matter at this time was chiefly allegorical and symbolic, often interpreted through the nude female figure. Dobson used a wide variety of materials, a fact suggesting a greater interest in the revelation of the intrinsic qualities of the material than in the subjective meaning of the image. In later years his forms again became more abstract.
