Subsequent works include the poetry collections The Other Side of the House (1988) and Mother Love (1995) and the novel Through the Ivory Gate (1992). In 1993 she became the youngest person and first African American to be appointed poet laureate of the United States by the Library of Congress. Her play The Darker Face of the Earth (published 1994) was first produced in 1996.
