Meaning of DRANCY in English

northeastern industrial suburb of Paris, Seine-Saint-Denis dpartement, Paris region, France. It lies 3 miles (5 km) from the city limits of the capital. During the German occupation of France in World War II, buildings in the southeast of the locality were turned into a concentration camp. From 1941 to 1944, about 120,000 French and non-French Jews passed through Drancy on their way to extermination camps in Poland, where most of them perished. The French artist and poet Max Jacob died in the Drancy camp in 1944. Pop. (1982) 60,122.
