city, Baden-Wrttemberg Land (state), southern Germany, on the Jagst River, north of Aalen. It originated around a Benedictine abbey, founded in 764 and transformed into a college of secular canons in 1460. Chartered in 1229, the town passed to Wrttemberg in 1802. Its castle, seat of the prince-abbots and priors, existed in 1266 and was rebuilt in Renaissance style about 1608. The Romanesque Collegiate Church of St. Vitus (11821233; Baroque interior) and the pilgrimage Church of St. Mary (168286) are also notable. Textiles and machinery are manufactured. Pop. (1992 est.) 22,961.
