also called Ellore town, northeastern Andhra Pradesh state, southern India, at the junction of the Godavari and Krishna canal systems. The name of the town was changed to its present form in 1949. Mainly a manufacturing town, Eluru produces textiles and leather products but is most noted for its pile carpets. It is also a centre for trade in rice, oilseeds, tobacco, and sugar. The town has a college affiliated with Andhra University in Waltair. Buddhist archaeological remains are at the nearby village of Pedda Vegi. Pop. (1981) 168,154.
