The island, with an area of 376 square miles (975 square km), rises in the interior to about 2,900 feet (885 m) at Santop Peak. It had a sandalwood trade beginning in 1825. There are significant stands of timber on Erromango, primarily kauri pine and assorted hardwoods, but commercial development has been retarded by the lack of shipping facilities. The island has no adequate harbours, and the only good anchorage is Cook Bay on the east coast. There are two airstrips. Copra is produced. Pop. (1979) 941.
