It is situated in the Pamirs of Tajikistan and is 48 miles (77 km) long, covering about 350 square miles (900 square km). It flows north from the ice field of Revolution Peak (22,880 feet ), receiving ice from 127 tributary glaciers. The average speed of the glacier in its middle course is 26 inches (67 cm) a day. Its meltwater forms the headstream of the Surkhob River and the Amu Darya.
