also spelled Phlrina, historically Chloros city, capital of the noms (department) of Flrina, western Macedonia, Greece. Originally a Byzantine foundation, it later passed to Ottoman control; by the 18th century, its population was chiefly Turkish and Albanian. In the 19th century, Flrina was a centre of Bulgarian irredentist agitation in Macedonia. It passed to Greece after the Balkan Wars (191213). Located in a fertile agricultural area, Flrina markets grain, wine grapes, and vegetables. It has textile mills and is known for fine leather handicrafts. The noms of Flrina extends along the Yugoslav and Albanian frontiers; it includes the Greek portions of Lake Prespa and Lmni (lake) Mikr Prspa. Kaolin, marble, lignite, and bauxite are mined. Pop. (1981) city, 12,573; noms, 52,430.
