genus of about 15 species of shrubs or small trees, constituting the family Garryaceae, and native to the western United States and Mexico, with one species occurring in the West Indies. The young branches of these plants are four-sided. Male and female flowers are on separate plants and grow in catkinlike flower clusters (the only genus in the order Cornales with such a flower cluster). G. elliptica, an early flowering species, is occasionally grown as an ornamental.
