GUARUJ

city, southeastern So Paulo state, Brazil, on the Atlantic coast of the Ilha (island) de Santo Amaro. Although it contains shipyards, Guaruj is known primarily as a beach resort. The casino, hotels, and other attractions there and at adjacent Praia Pernambuco cater to visitors from inland Brazil. The city is a suburb of Santos, 5 mi (8 km) to the northwest, with which it is linked by highway and railroad. Pop. (1980 prelim.) 67,730.
