GUECHO

Meaning of GUECHO in English

town, suburb of Bilbao, Biscay (Vizcaya) provincia, in the autonomous Basque Country, northern Spain. It is located near where the Nervin River empties into the Bay of Biscay and includes four barrios (city districts): Algorta, Las Arenas, Neguri, and Santa Mara de Guecho (from which the municipality derives its name). Its founding is linked to the noble families of Martiartu and Guecho. Although primarily residential, the city's 6 miles (10 km) of coastline and four beaches afford ample fishing and swimming. Las Arenas is connected to Portugalete across the Nervin by the Vizcaya Bridge, a lofty suspension bridge. Pop. (1981) 67,321.
