born March 8, 1879, Frankfurt am Main, Ger. died July 28, 1968, Gttingen, W.Ger. Otto Hahn German chemist who, with the radiochemist Fritz Strassmann, is credited with the discovery of nuclear fission. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1944 and shared the Enrico Fermi Award in 1966 with Strassmann and Lise Meitner. Additional reading William R. Shea (ed.), Otto Hahn and the Rise of Nuclear Physics (1983), contains a collection of 10 essays discussing the work by Hahn and others on radioactivity and nuclear physics.
