long, ornamental pin used for decoration and for fastening a woman's hat securely to her hair. In the late Victorian era and the beginning of the 20th century, the hatpin became a popular and important clothing accessory. Hatpins were usually about 8 inches (20 cm) long and were often worn in pairs. They frequently had ornamented or jeweled heads.
